The Product

The dbx162SL is a high end dual channel compressor limiter built to incredibly high standards and housed in a solid chassis with a front panel machined from aircraft grade aluminium with handcrafted solid control knobs. The signal LEDs are mounted in stainless steel housings and the main level meters are custom made for this device. The 162SL combines the best features of all the great dbx compressors, past and present, and gives the user more versatile performance than ever before. The auto attack and release, and the hard knee threshold characteristics of the classic dbx 160 have been incorporated in this design, along with AutoVelocity manual mode, and classic dbx OverEasy mode, made standard by the legendary dbx 165A. Other features have also been added including variable attack and release controls, and the latest dbx limiting algorithm called PeakStopPlus.

Audio inputs and outputs are available balanced and unbalanced presented on both XLR and ¼" jack connectors respectively, and are filtered against radio frequencies. Sensitivity is switchable between -10dBV and +4dBu and independent ground lift switches are provided for each channel. Side-chain send and return circuits for each channel are presented on the rear panel on ¼" jack connectors and mains power is applied via a standard 3 pole IEC connector.

The Manufacturer

dbx was founded in 1971 by David Blackmer who started his career working in professional recording studios. He developed a new process called linear decibel companding, a process considered at the time to be many times more effective than Dolby in reducing tape noise. Although the company went on to develop a range of signal processing equipment for use in recording studios, it was always best known for its noise reduction designs. After several mergers and acquisitions dBx is now owned by Harman International and continues to develop and manufacture a wide range of signal processing equipment which represent a solid build quality, a musical sound quality and excellent value for money.
