The dbx 160SL is the dual channel compressor to which others are compared. It is a 2U rackmounting chassis and this superb audio tool boasts an impressive dynamic range of 127dB, with all the usual high end professional features you would expect in such a unit. The new dbx limiting algorithm PeakStopPlus allows an overall protection level to be set for each channel regardless of the individual compressor settings and the new AutoVelocity technology allows easy creation of exactly the right attack and release effect, independent of program material. Monitoring is via a pair of superb peak program VU meters which, in addition to being extremely accurate, give the unit a fashionable retro feel. The dbx Auto mode and fully balanced sidechain, together with a host of gold plated, military/aviation spec components, make this a truly professional workhorse.

The Manufacturer

dbx was founded in 1971 by David Blackmer who started his career working in professional recording studios. He developed a new process called linear decibel companding, a process considered at the time to be many times more effective than Dolby in reducing tape noise. Although the company went on to develop a range of signal processing equipment for use in recording studios, it was always best known for its noise reduction designs. After several mergers and acquisitions dbx is now owned by Harman International and continues to develop and manufacture a wide range of signal processing equipment which represent a solid build quality, a musical sound quality and excellent value for money.
