The Product

The Zoom H4N is the big brother to the successful and popular H2. It is a compact portable solid state recorder which sits comfortably in the palm of your hand, ideally suited for applications such as recording meetings, interviews, musical performances, training and seminars. Recording formats include MP3 up to 320kbps and WAV format up to 24-bit/96 kHz which can be easily accessed via the touch of a button. It uses standard SD sized memory cards up to a size of 32Gb.

Stereo recording with a pair of microphones can be challenging to the novice, however the H4N incorporates two onboard X/Y stereo condenser capsules. These two microphones offer variable recording patterns at either 90° (standard) or 120° (wide-angle), which ensures versatility in any stereo recording.

External microphones and equipment sources can be connected to the H4N via the innovative XLR/¼" Jack Neutrik combo connector. The ¼" Jack input is hi impedance which is useful for recording guitars or other line input sources and the XLR provides professional compatibility for external microphones and includes switchable phantom power. The H4N offers the ability to record four simultaneous channels of audio when combining the internal microphones with external microphones, blending the levels with the on board mixer. The H4N also functions as a USB audio interface, allowing you to record directly to a computer.

Other novel features include a built in chromatic tuner, automatic recording function which starts recording when audio is detected, auto gain control, sound normalization combined with the ability to convert WAV files into MP3, stamina mode that extends the battery life to 11 hours, support of BWF (broadcast wave format) and a digital effects processor.

The H4N also features twelve classic guitar amp sounds and a controllable phrase trainer which help to make this product exceptional value for money.

The Manufacturer

Zooms company roots go back to 1983 when it spent its first seven years helping other musical instrument manufacturers develop musical instrument technology, amassing technical skills and financial resources in the process. In 1988, they got to work on the development of their first proprietary product which paved the way for the introduction of a diverse line of highly original and innovative products, ranging from effect processors to rhythm machines, samplers and recorders and just about everything in between.
