The FETHEAD FILTER is a high quality, phantom powered in-line preamp with an integral 220Hz pass filter for improving dynamic and ribbon microphone performance. By simply inserting the FETHEAD FILTER between the XLR output connector on a compatible microphone and its microphone cable, it results in a more open, controlled sound for all dynamic and ribbon microphones.

With it's distinguishing green dot, the FETHEAD FILTER has the addition of a built-in high pass filter at 220Hz (other cutoff frequencies are available on request) which reduces the excessive low frequency/proximity effects that some microphones exhibit, such as long motor ribbon mics. The filter elements are not directly in the signal path but are applied to the components which set the gain of the FETHEAD FILTER's amplifier - this ensures frequency dependance and that the sonic characteristics of the FETHEAD are preserved.

From a Shure SM58 through to a Sennheiser MD441, tests have shown that the difference a FETHEAD FILTER makes to the responsiveness and frequency range is undeniable. Ribbon microphones (themselves dynamic in construction) benefit greatly from the use of a FetHead as the improved impedance match lessens the load on the microphone resulting in better transient response. The FetHead employs a low noise JFET double Class A amplifier design which delivers low noise, high quality signal amplification and enables ribbon microphones to be used on softer recordings without incurring noise issues.

The calculated noise figures based on the JFETs datasheet are lower than TritonAudio can measure, however in the real world the quality of the phantom power supply will dictate the noise performance. In essence, if the power supply is quiet, FETHEAD FILETR is quiet. As some ribbon microphones will not tolerate phantom power, the FETHEAD FILTER design protects the microphone by not passing phantom power to its input stage, ensuring that less tolerant microphones will not be damaged.

The FETHEAD is also available in two other versions. One without a high-pass filter simply called the FETHEAD (Order Code 78-1301), and also as a version without a filter which will pass phantom power to the microphone called the FETHEAD PHANTOM (Order Code 78-1307).
