The Product
The Tascam DP-004 is a compact, lightweight digital four track portastudio which has a footprint similar to the size of a paperback book. It has been conceived on the back of more than thirty years of pioneering cassette based portastudio designs from Tascam, but incorporating modern, quiet digital technology, whilst maintaining the simplicity and accessibility of earlier technology. Files are stored on standard SD sized memory cards.
Its versatility enables the user to record two simultaneous tracks in 44.1kHz/16-bit WAV format by using either the built in stereo condenser microphone, or by connecting external microphones via the pair of ¼" Jack sockets. These can also be used as direct line inputs to record guitars, synthesizers or other instruments of the users choice. The controls are both intuitive and tactile with input level and track panning functions provided on each track via rotary knobs and a simple single button operation to place a track into record ready.
Once the recordings are complete the DP-004 allows the over-dubbing of pre recorded audio cuts, which is a useful tool for the user who wishes to add narration, singing or further instruments to a previously recorded track. It even has the ability to playback up to four simultaneous tracks, considered a useful tool within post production. A bounce feature is provided which enables the user to mixdown up to four pre-recorded tracks to a stereo track enabling more room for additional overdub layers. Alternatively the user can use the USB 2.0 interface to transfer the data to a Mac or PC for further track editing and mastering.
Other novel features include a chromatic tuner/metronome, punch in and out, a repeat function, locate features (enabling the user to move to a certain time position), duplicate, erase, and insert silence to a track and an all important undo/redo button with up to 500 steps.
The Tascam DP-004 portastudio is a very affordable, feature rich product, built to the usual high standards expected from Tascam. It is the perfect companion for beginners, composers, bands, music teachers alike and as a songwriters sketchpad tool, enabling moments of inspiration to be easily captured.
The Tascam PS-P520 AC adapter is available separately as an option.
