The Product
The Tascam DP-008 is a small, lightweight digital eight track portastudio which has a footprint not much bigger than the size of a paperback book. It has been conceived on the back of more than thirty years of pioneering cassette based portastudio designs from Tascam, but incorporating modern, quiet digital technology, whilst maintaining the simplicity and accessibility of earlier technology. Files are stored on standard SD sized memory cards.
Its versatility enables the user to record two simultaneous tracks in 44.1kHz/16-bit WAV format. Recordings can be made using either the built in stereo condenser microphone, by connecting external microphones via the two balanced XLR sockets (globally assignable phantom power enables condenser microphone use), or through the two unbalanced ¼" jack line inputs. The line inputs enable recording of guitars, synthesizers or other instruments of the users choice. The controls are both intuitive and tactile with input level, track panning and reverb level functions provided on each track via colour coded rotary knobs and a simple single button operation to place a track into record ready. Equalisation can be applied to the inputs prior to recording or to a track post recording to ensure the sound recorded is precisely to your requirements.
Once the recordings are complete the DP-008 allows the over-dubbing of pre recorded audio cuts, which is a useful tool for the user who wishes to add narration, singing or further instruments to an available track. Punch in and punch out facilities exist (manual, auto or foot switch operated) to re-record a specific section of an existing track recording. A bounce feature is provided which enables the user to mixdown up to eight pre-recorded tracks to a stereo track enabling more room for additional overdub layers. Up to eight tracks can be played back simultaneously, an extremely useful tool within post production. Mastering can be undertaken on the DP-008 allowing live adjustment of pan and level whilst mixing down to a stereo recording (2 track). As the DP-008 is a digital audio device a whole realm of track editing functionality becomes available without the use of an external computer; you can cut, copy, paste, insert, move, silence, clone, and erase track data. Each event you carry out on the DP-008 can be undone and if you change your mind even reapplied using the all important undo/redo button, during a session it will remember the last 500 steps. For more detailed manipulation of the recording there is a USB 2.0 interface to transfer the data to a Mac or PC for further track editing and mastering.
Other novel features include a chromatic tuner/metronome, six reverb types (Hall 1, Hall 2, Room, Studio, Plate 1 and Plate 2), an oscillator mode, a repeat function, and locate features (enabling the user to move to a certain time position).
The Tascam DP-008 Pocketstudio is a very affordable, feature rich product, built to the usual high standards expected from Tascam. It is the perfect companion for beginners, composers, bands, music teachers alike and as a songwriters sketchpad tool, enabling moments of inspiration to be easily captured.
The Tascam PS-P520 AC adapter is available separately as an option.
