The Product

The Radial JDI is a passive DI box designed to handle extreme signal levels without distortion of any kind. Unlike active electronic designs that are limited by the buffer amplifier rail voltage, the JDI employs a Jensen audio transformer at the heart of the design. Jensen transformers are legendary in their ability to gracefully handle transients while delivering a smooth, warm sounding Bessel curve, reminiscent of the finest vintage equipment. Ruler flat from 10Hz to 40kHz and with virtually zero phase deviation, the JDI delivers the natural, pure sound of the instrument without unwanted artifacts.

The 100% passive circuitry inside the JDI is incredibly efficient. The transformer performs both high-to-low impedance conversion and signal balancing at the same time with minimal loading and does so without any power whatsoever. The transformer also introduces a magnetic bridge that passes signal while rejecting stray DC voltage. This makes the JDI particularly adept at eliminating hum and buzz caused by ground loops. The case is incredibly tough manufactured from 14 gauge steel, incorporating an I beam chassis format with a bookend style outer casing, resulting in a product capable of withstanding the worst possible rock and roll abuse.

Features include a main signal input presented on a ¼" jack connector with an associated loop through output also presented on a ¼" jack, and a 15dB pad for signal matching. A switchable merge function uses the through output as a second input which gets summed with the main input, providing a quick solution for feeding stereo devices to a single mono mixer channel. The main line output is presented on a 3 pole male XLR connector, along with a switchable band pass filter for loudspeaker emulation, phase reverse switch and a ground lift switch to quickly deal with earth loop hum problems.

The Manufacturer

The company began operations in 1991 as the Canadian distributor of Mogami cable and Jensen Audio Transformers. In 1992, it became a limited corporation under the JP Cabletek Electronics Limited banner. The Radial name was first used on house branded cables and multicore systems, but today over fifty electronic products are now being produced under the Radial, Tonebone and Forest Audio brands. Radial products are extremely rugged and can withstand the rigors and abuse associated with touring and live music.
