The Product

The Neumann KMR81I is an outstanding high directivity short shotgun microphone for use in the film, television and electronic news gathering industries. It uses a combination of a pressure gradient transducer and an interference tube. If the wavelength of the frequency is longer than the tube length, the microphone functions as pressure gradient transducer, but at higher frequencies it operates as an interference transducer for lateral sound. Off-axis sound sources are picked up with reduced level, but without coloration. This design of microphone is well suited to record individual instruments of an orchestra where pickup areas of several shotgun microphones may even overlap, but without causing any problem.

Other features include extremely low self noise, good impulse response, high output level, a 10dB attenuation switch and a switchable 200Hz high-pass filter. The microphone capsule is positioned inside a housing tube that is acoustically open but has a high flow resistance. The directional pattern of the microphone is lobe shaped and the attenuation of lateral sound is practically independent of the frequency. The character of this design is such that toward the lower frequencies, the sensitivity of the microphone is attenuated by approximately 15dB at 50Hz but the frequency range above 200Hz is unaffected. This model comes in a satin nickel finish.

Requires phantom power to function.

The Manufacturer

Neumann was formed in 1928 by Georg Neumann and Erich Rickmann. They were consumed by the idea of mass producing a microphone using the capacitative transducer principle and out of this passion came a series of definitive studio microphones which have become legendary in their own right. Neumann continues to lead the way in microphone technology and many engineers and producers consider Neumann products to be the best that money can buy.
