The Product
The Marantz PMD580 is a 1U rack-mounting solid state digital recorder born out of the success of the popular portable solid state recorders which have been revolutionising the world of broadcasting, journalism, and portable recording. With no moving parts, solid state technology has made repair and maintenance practically a thing of the past. Now Marantz Professional brings the flexibility and reliability of this format to the discerning professional with full network capability.
Analogue audio inputs and outputs are presented unbalanced on phono and balanced on XLR connectors. Digital S/PDIF and AES/EBU input and outputs are also located on the rear panel, along with a remote control jack, an RS-232 interface and RJ45 LAN interface. Recording directly to Compact Flash card or microdrive, the PMD580 will record in either PCM 16/24 bit or MP3 file formats to give the greatest range of flexibility between sound quality and recording time. Once recorded, the files can be automatically archived to a network drive, via the network connection, or transferred manually to a PC for editing and re-distribution. To fully automate the process, the unit can be programmed for scheduled recording, and subsequent auto-copying of the recorded files to your local network. If required, full remote control can be made via either the RS232 facility, or via the internet using the LAN connection.
The front panel has been laid out in a simple but intuitive way giving the user quick access to the essential functions buttons including rugged transport control and menu navigation, supported by a large clear LCD display and separate audio level meter. The front panel also offers a useful ¼" headphone jack with level control giving the user quick and easy monitoring access, as well as a USB connector for easy file transfer. Basic non-destructive editing has been written into the firmware as well as a host of other innovative features which combine to make this a great audio tool.
The Manufacturer
Marantz was officially founded in 1953 by Saul Bernard Marantz, a native of New York born in 1911. Unhappy with equipment available at the time, Saul spent many hours in his basement constructing amplifiers which ultimately found favour with like minded audio professionals. From these humble beginnings, Marantz has become a highly respected manufacturer and innovator of Hi Fi and broadcast related products throughout the world.
