The Product

The Fostex UR2 is a new generation stereo memory recorder from Fostex that uses 2 SD cards (SDHC compatible) and USB storage devices as the recording media. The recording/playback file format is BWF (WAV). It is crammed with useful features that should easily adapt to the wide variety of playback requirements in pro audio and broadcast. It offers high quality recording of up to 24bit/96kHz (in BWF format). Employing FAT 32 disc format, it is easy to process the file transfer to PC based digital audio workstations.

Both analog input and outputs are available presented balanced on XLR/+4dBu and unbalanced on phono/-10dBV and a digital input and output has been provided complying to AES/EBU and S/PDIF digital signal formats. Playback functions include chain play and timer play modes, rendering it suitable for live stage performance as well as sound system installation. External parallel remote control is available on a 25pin D type connector and a serial RS-232C. Fostex have also included a USB connector on the front panel for easy naming of tracks plus triggering of events in broadcast and theatre applications.

The microphone input located on the front panel is a useful addition and offers 48V phantom power. Not only can it be used for straight forward recording but also for speech to be mixed with a playback source. Last but not least, its newly employed organic EL display gives an extremely clear indication of status of the various functions and actions. Although the UR2 is supplied with a mains power adaptor it is possible to directly power the unit from an external DC power source making it ideal for portable film and ENG applications.
