The Product

The Focusrite TWINTRAK PRO is a stereo or dual mono channel strip offering a high quality pre amplifier, a mid scoop equaliser, optical compressor and comprehensive output monitoring stage. It can be used as a front pre amp in any recording chain from conventional multi-track setups to more simple DAW based recording, or it may be used for mastering as a tracking device.

The pre amplifier design employs a class A discrete transistor based design delivering the same wide bandwidth philosophy featured in the original vintage Focusrite units, ensuring low noise and distortion. It also features a controllable mic input impedance, with a switchable effect to enable the pre amp to recreate the open and airy qualities of more expensive transformer based pre amps, by using air cored inductors.

The dual mono/stereo compressor section employs a custom fast-acting opto design, with a comprehensive set of controls and true stereo linking to provide extremely smooth yet effective control of dynamics through the device.

The main output and monitor section is designed to ensure you can monitor the source signals within the mix, directly at source, avoiding having to resort to monitoring via a digital audio workstation or digital desk, both of which can be prone to latency issues. A 24 bit/192 kHz DAC is also fitted as standard, for processing digital signals or feeding digital signals into the monitoring path. The optional 24 bit/96kHz A/D can be retro-fitted and both the ADC and the DAC feature wordclock via a BNC.

Other features include post pre amp inserts and compressor side chain inserts, switchable 48V microphone phantom power, a direct instrument input presented on a ¼" Jack and a headphone output with rotary level control.

The Focusrite brand was established in 1985 on principles of developing products that sounded musical in use, as well as meeting current measurable standards on the test bench. Although Focusrite do not produce a massive range of products, the items they do manufacturer are superb in sound quality, very tactile in use and exceptionally well engineered. In essence Focusrite products are built by musicians for musicians and loved by many.
