The Product

The Roland R4PRO is the flagship of the Roland portable field recorders. It is a four channel, solid state recorder that accepts SMTPE time code enabling it to be slaved to video cameras or VTR's. It uses an internal 80GB hard drive to store audio files, delivering quiet and reliable recording for a variety of professional audio needs.

Five on-board effects are available including a 3-band equaliser, a 6-band graphic equaliser, a noise gate, a sound enhancer and a compressor/deEsser. A pre-record buffer is provided which ensures the front of your audio cut is not clipped, but captured cleanly. The clear LCD display, coupled with the built-in stereo speakers also lets you edit cuts with simple intuitive control input from the shuttle dial, allowing you to scrub through the cut to reach your desired edit point.

Although the R4PRO incorporates two good quality built-in omni-directional back electret condenser microphones, it also offers four combo input connectors which support the connection of both XLR and ¼" Jack plugs, enabling the user to use a wide range of external specialist microphones. The XLR inputs are also equipped with phantom power. A ¼" headphone socket has also been provided for people who prefer more intimate monitoring in the field. The system architecture gives the choice of recording in mono, stereo, dual stereo or four track modes to suit the requirements of any given production.

Other valuable features include instant index point marking during record and playback, DC input enabling the unit to be powered from industry standard ENG power sources, instant back-up of cuts to flash memory via USB and standard AES/EBU digital interface. Overall the R4PRO is a reliable workhorse for professionals who demand excellent results time after time.

The Manufacturer

The Roland Corporation is a Japanese manufacturer of electronic musical instruments, electronic equipment and software and was founded by Kabushiki Kaisha in 1972 in Osaka. Roland has been pivotal in developing benchmark electronic musical instruments such as the Juno 60 and Jupiter 8 synthesizers used in the forefront of 1980's pop music by the likes of Howard Jones, Duran Duran and Culture Club. Many original Roland sounds and modules have re-surfaced as samples and plug-ins which emulate the retro feel of the original hardware. Today Roland has factories in the US, Italy, Japan and Taiwan and employs over 2200 staff. Roland has survived many changes in the industry and still remains at the cutting edge of electronic music technology to this day.
