The Product

The DPA 4017B is a shotgun condenser microphone, comprised of an MMC4017 supercardioid capsule mated to an MMP-B preamplifier. It is suitable for a broad range of applications, being particularly ideal for use with camera systems, in fixed positions at sports facilities, for broadcast, ENG or film booming, and even studio recording environments. This combination makes for a short and exceptionally lightweight shotgun microphone solution that truly measures up to DPA’s impressive reputation for accuracy, clarity, and musicality.

The MMC4017 is a pre-polarised supercardioid capsule with a frequency response of 10Hz to 20KHz. The highly directional supercardioid pickup pattern is obtained using a supercardioid capsule design with an interference tube that together deliver excellent off-axis rejection. Extensive research and development has been undertaken to optimize the sound coming from the sides and behind the microphone. Minimizing the often very un-linear response of a shotgun microphone due to its side lobes is one of the key accomplishments of the MMC4017. The condenser capsule uses a high voltage pre-polarized back plate, endowing the shotgun with high output as well as wide dynamics, extremely low noise and distortion specifications.

The DPA MMP-B is an ultra transparent transformerless preamplifier with active drive for impedance balancing. This design innovation improves the symmetrical damping and lowers the distortion. In addition the phase response is linear without having to use a transformer beyond 50 kHz with a phase deviation less than 5°. It is incredibly quiet with a self noise figure of only 1.1µV (A-weighted) and has a wide dynamic range of 124dB, making it more than capable be coping with just about any real world scenario.

Unlike the MMP-A and MMP-C, DPA have added a switchable high boost curve of +4dB at 8 kHz and a switchable low cut first order filter rolling off below 120Hz. It is a superb example of engineering from DPA and when mated with any of the head capsules in the 2000 and 4000 range in the Reference Standard series, it becomes the audiophile’s choice with low distortion and total accurate and faithful sound.

The DPA 4000 series utilises the same modular functionality as the DPA 2000 series and are all part of the DPA Reference Standard series. By applying this toolbox approach, the perfect microphone for your requirement can be assembled from the individual components.

Requires phantom power to function.

The Manufacturer

Although DPA has technically only been in existence since 1992, the company roots go back to the 1950s, drawing on the development, designs and experience of Brüel and Kjœr, from who DPA were born. The company has enjoyed tremendous growth becoming a world leader in the design and manufacturer of world-class miniature microphone technology. Their products are globally praised for their exceptional clarity and transparency, superb specifications, supreme reliability and, above all, pure, uncoloured and undistorted sound.
